Thomas Sinclair was born on October 20, 1835, and lived in Steubenville and Carrollton, Ohio. Around 1853, he moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a clerk. He married Catherine Brooks Dohrman in 1859 and the couple later returned to Steubenville, where Thomas became a druggist. Their son, Dohrman James Sinclair, became a banker and philanthropist.
